NDCA Discusson over Paperful/Paperless Debate in LD and Policy

The NDCA will hold a discussion over paperless and paperful debating at the Greenhill Invitational.  As many of you remember, in the past, the NDCA has hosted “town hall” meetings at Greenhill.  We decided this year that we would facilitate a conversation, instead, over a particular topic.  We also thought that posing some initial discussion questions might help the continue a conversation that occurred at both policy and ld workshops across the country this summer.  You will see those questions below.

We also know that its difficult to attend meetings during power match breaks AND mange to get yourself hydrated and fed.  As a result, Aaron and Eric have agreed to allow us to hold our discussion in the judge lounge in the recital hall of the Fine Arts Building.  We are grateful to their continued support of the NDCA as well as this change in venue to make it easier for us all to get together!

Questions for your consideration:

1 - What equipment or knowledge do I need if I choose to start the transition to paperless?

2 - Should judges try to add a statement about their view on paperless in their philosophy?  (not as a "rule" but a norm)

3 - How should judges view prep time when students are "jumping" their speech?

4 - How should judges handle when a "crash" occurs?  How should a judge ensure that the "crash time" is not prep time stealing?  How long is too long to allow for a crash recovery?

5 - Which evidence should the judge read - the speaker's computer or the viewing computer?

6 - What strategies can we as coaches use to help our students approach judges and other debaters about their needs in debates whether they are paperless or paperful?
